Wael el Namla
The family was taking shelter inside the house during the war on Gaza in 2014. During a 72 hours truce that was announced, my family and I went out to what we thought was a safer place, and before we got there, a sudden bombing happened and there was the tragedy; my brother, his wife, and his children were killed, and my wife, son, and I lost our feet.
“I am unable to do anything for my family. My wife and son and myself we all lost our legs. Today my father is our leg that we lean on. I am very afraid of the unknown future. I am afraid if there is a bombing and a new war, how can we escape?”
“I feel a lot of pain when it’s cold. I feel my leg there, it itches but when I try to touch it, I remember that it was amputated.”
“I will participate in international competitions and raise the flag of my country.”
“The hardest thing that happened to me was that I spent six months not knowing that my mother and brothers had died. I would ask about them and they would tell me they were fine.”
Ahed Bou Shakfeh
“I couldn't believe I was still alive.”
